First, use the names correctly

G10 is a generic NEMA-grade designation commonly used for epoxy-glass laminate. Micarta® is a registered trademark, not the generic name for every resin-impregnated fabric sheet. The broad comparison in this article is therefore G10 versus cotton- or linen-reinforced phenolic laminate; authentic branded Micarta® should be identified only when the product is actually supplied under that mark.

Where emissions are likely to arise

For G10, major contributors typically include glass-fiber production, epoxy constituents, prepreg preparation, heated pressing, finishing and transport. For phenolic fabric laminate, contributors include growing or manufacturing the textile fiber, weaving, phenolic resin production, impregnation, heated pressing and finishing.

Natural fiber does not automatically mean a lower finished-product footprint. Agricultural inputs, textile processing, resin content, curing efficiency and rejected sheets all matter. Likewise, glass fiber is energy-intensive, but stable quality and long service life may reduce replacements.

Durability changes the result

If two handles have different service lives, compare impact per year of useful service rather than per kilogram of sheet. In wet, chemically exposed or high-impact use, G10 may last longer. In many outdoor and everyday-carry applications, a well-made fabric laminate also performs for decades. The correct material is the one that comfortably meets—not greatly exceeds—the requirement.

Repairable construction improves both choices. Replaceable scales, standard fastener spacing and retained CAD files allow a worn handle to be renewed without discarding the blade.

What evidence should a buyer request?

Ask for the declared reinforcement and resin family, manufacturing location, sheet density, recycled or bio-based content if claimed, electricity or energy information where available, packaging method, and a product carbon footprint or EPD only if it follows a recognized method and states its boundary. Compare documents from the same year and scope.

Avoid claims such as ‘zero carbon,’ ‘100% eco-friendly’ or ‘plastic-free.’ Better wording is specific: ‘designed for long service life,’ ‘cut-to-size options can improve material yield,’ or ‘contains cotton-fabric reinforcement.’

  • Identify the exact grade, construction, color and production site.
  • Define the end use, expected environment and required test methods.
  • Request dated, product-specific declarations—not a generic company certificate.
  • Compare usable-part yield and service life, not only price per sheet.
  • Reconfirm legal requirements at the time and place of sale.

Can I publish a fixed CO₂ value for each material?

Only with product-specific, comparable life-cycle data. Generic values can be misleading because formulation and energy mix vary.

Does cotton reinforcement make phenolic laminate biodegradable?

No. The thermoset resin matrix prevents the finished laminate from behaving like untreated cotton.

Which is greener for a wet-service knife?

Often the grade that maintains performance longest with the fewest replacements. G10 may have an advantage where water resistance is critical.
