REACH: substance and article duties
REACH can affect substances, mixtures and articles placed on the EU market. A declaration should state the exact material, grade, revision date, Candidate List version and basis of the statement. ‘REACH certified’ is usually imprecise because REACH is a regulatory framework, not a single universal product certificate.
RoHS: first confirm product scope
RoHS primarily applies to electrical and electronic equipment and restricts substances in homogeneous materials. A standalone knife or handle blank is generally not electrical equipment. A composite handle used in an electrical device, powered tool or another in-scope product may need supporting RoHS information as part of the finished product’s compliance file.
Ask whether testing covers the supplied grade and color. Pigments, additives, metal inserts and coatings can change the compliance profile even when the base laminate is unchanged.
CBAM: do not assume composite sheets are covered
The EU’s definitive CBAM regime began on 1 January 2026. Its core sectors are cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen. Standard G10, phenolic fabric laminate and carbon-fiber polymer composite sheets are not automatically CBAM goods merely because they have a carbon footprint.
However, a shipment or finished product containing listed steel or aluminium goods may require an HS/CN-code review. Importers should classify the actual goods and consult current European Commission guidance. CBAM is code- and scope-driven, not a generic carbon tax on every imported material.
A 2026 compliance document pack
Request the SDS or safety information where applicable; a material composition or substance declaration; current REACH Candidate List statement; RoHS declaration only when relevant; test reports with lab, method, sample identity and date; and country of origin and tariff classification support. Keep supplier, grade, color and batch traceable through purchase order and inspection records.
